A PUPPY survived having a BBQ fork stuck in its brain for three days before a vet was able to pull the prongs out.

Smokey, a 12-week-old chihuahua, was playing at a family gathering in the US state of Kentucky when an oversized fork snapped in half on a grill and sent the pointy end flying through the air before it embedded in the puppy’s head.

The distressed pup ran off into woodland with the fork still sticking out before owner Hughie Wagers could react.

It wasn’t until two days later that Mr Wagers found Smokey wimpering in the undergrowth and rushed the pup to Cumberland Valley Animal Hospital, in London, Kentucky, UK newspaper The Daily Telegraph reports.

The astonished vet on duty Dr Keaton Smith assessed the situation.

“When we got the x-ray up it was clear that this fork was not in the skull cavity, or behind the eye, it was in the brain,” Dr Smith told The Daily Telegraph.

“Smokey had been out in the woods for two days with this in his head and we really didn’t know what would happen when we pulled it out, it was 50-50 if he would make it.

“The operation didn’t really take any time at all, I just shaved his head and then pulled it out, it was all over in 30 seconds.”

Smokey has made what appears to be a near full recovery except for some muscle control of his right eye and eyelids, causing him to squint.

“His nerve endings around the eye still seem to be a little slow but I think that will heal over time, he really is a little miracle,” Dr Smith said.
